As Melbourne Polytechnic illustration graduates leave their familiar Fairfield surrounds we may wonder where they are headed. Illustrators now are presented with a myriad of opportunities to apply their ideas and craft, a far cry from distant years when illustration found traction as a visual accompaniment to literature. 2017 graduates will likely find themselves creating images to be exhibited in galleries, applying visual concepts to urban settings carrying messages of social importance, engaging with moving pictures and disseminating their creativity across emerging media.

It is timely to note however, the extra dimension alluded to some years ago by the acclaimed designer Tibor Kalman, who remarked in a 1999 Graphis interview, ‘What matters is the content of your message, and how it impacts upon the world’. An illustrator with a strong personal vision can invent, comment, tell stories and affect people’s lives, and all the while keep an eye out for that elusive commission; the enduring book containing pictures.

The exhibition STOKED showcases the craft and personal aesthetic of this graduate class, a talent nurtured by a passionate group of lecturers, and sustained by a committed support and administrative staff. We all congratulate our departing illustrators and wish them well.
