(AN)OTHER

Nash is a Sri Lankan multi-disciplinary artist based in Melbourne. His work is both cynical social commentary, and an account of his personal experience as an immigrant- the ‘other’ in Australian society. This exhibition ‘(AN)OTHER’, attempts to explore the dichotomy between the genuine and unwilling ‘othered’ in society, and those who crave an othered status; their obsession with identity politics becomes both fashion statement and a weapon wielded for personal gain. When there is widespread disdain for the ordinary, such people paradoxically become just “another”. Among his groups of idiosyncratic characters lies one unifying characteristic, that of appearing tired.

WISH YOU WERE HERE

‘Wish you were here’ is a series of captured scenes taken from recent travels. These scenes were created in an effort to try to remember and imprint on my mind places and feelings that I do not want to forget. Instead of an instant photograph captured by a phone and swiftly forgotten, by studying the lines and shapes of meals, surfaces and interiors I am holding onto the thoughts, feelings and events that swirled around those views. Colour is abstracted and representative of my minds editing to fit the mood through which the scene was viewed.

TO RETURN TO MY TREES

The Welsh phrase “Dod yn ôl at fy nghoed” translates as “to return to a balanced state of mind.”
But its literal meaning is “to return to my trees”.
These drawings are my personal journey through landscape, returning to my trees, finding calm in a world of chaos.
Withdrawal into the forest provides the starting point for many traditional tales. In my work, I explore the human relationship to the natural landscape and how we navigate this space. The theme of the journey, physical and symbolic, and its accompanying narrative are also core themes in my work.

STRUCTURE

My third exhibition at Off the Kerb, ‘Structure’ is a collection of work where I have tried to further refine my use of line and contour. I have continued to depict the formality of shop fronts and architectural detail but have expanded my practice to include more organic lines and shapes. I have challenged myself to use more contrast and shade to create a deeper perspective. Melbourne is a city where the built-up environment is never devoid of life with the softness of human and organic form. I wanted to explore and express these elements in ‘Structure’.
