WHAT THE SEA GAVE BACK
by Barek

Throughout my life I’ve had a strong connection to the sea. Both in my upbringing living near the sea, food gathering with my family, adolescence climbing through the mangroves and through to adult life spending time investigating rock pools, flipping rocks, poking through flotsam and jetsam while fossil hunting along the coast.

Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck, accident or loss. Jetsam describes debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by people or the crew of a ship in distress, most often to lighten the ship or one’s personal load.

The sea has become a recurring theme in my work, I have however, never swam in the ocean. Something about it scares me and I often joke that ‘I know everything in the sea wants to kill me’. So I paint ocean and coral scenes from feelings, not from life, and they represent my idyllic view of life ‘down there’.  My work is also addressing environmental issues regarding what we’re doing to our seas and what ends up in them.

ODDBALLS
by Tinky

In her second solo show with Off the Kerb, Tinky presents Oddballs – an alternate world of misfits and fish out of water (literally) going about their day-to-day life, often with preposterous results.

Verging on the absurd, adventures abound with an assortment of medical catastrophes and near-misses, peculiar social gatherings, harebrained ideas, and overtones of innuendo.

Tinky’s un-PC installations draw attention to a gaggle of oddballs, each oblivious to the madcappery surrounding them, with her trademark puns to offer context.

VESSELS
by Sasha Heath

Sasha Heath also known as Hellotomato is both an illustrator and ceramicist living in Melbourne. She enrolled in a pottery course in 2017 and has been hooked ever since. Illustrating in clay she soon realised that there can be a beautiful relationship between both form and function. Each piece has been made with functionality in mind, why can't something sculptural not also have a purpose. 'Vessels' is an intimate body of work made during her most recent pottery residency at Northcote Pottery Supplies. These imaginative sculptures all have a purpose to either hold or hide items and can also be used around the home.

UPSTAIRS GALLERY

CITADEL
by Alexia Novella  & Timothy Perkins

Citadel is an exhibition of works inspired by our experience of living in the city. We both are motivated to make work about what it is like to live here and the type of things you see and feel. Timothy Perkins makes paintings about our relationship to urban spaces and how we navigate places that are designed to direct our movement and focus our attention. Alexia Novella plays on the conventions of the still life genre to represent the character of places within Melbourne.
