THE WAY WE LOOKED AT EACH OTHER

The Way We Looked At Each Other examines the poetics of Australian sporting,
political and cultural iconography and landscape, considered through the nostalgic
impetus to return to what is ‘homely’ and how memory can change over time, creating
shifting narrative and truth.
Utilising pencil, graphite and watercolour, all which require fine attention and patience,
works are finished in glass resin, giving inert artworks new form and understated
movement in light and reflection as the viewer moves.
The smaller works offer a departure from previously large scale works that had
contemplated a narrative somewhere ‘out there’; elsewhere, instead (as isolation has
done for most of us) articulating space and sense of place in the intimate.

MIGRATION

Migration references aerial views of the Victorian landscape. Taking inspiration from the texture, shape and movement of the rivers, bush land, and mountains in and around the areas I call home. Experiencing the journey of moving from one home to another and the push and pull between living in the city but always being drawn back to the country and the coast. Exploring these concepts through the process of knitting, where each individual stitch cannot be undone once knitted. These knitting paintings tell a story of my ever-changing interactions with the surrounding environment.

WALLFLOWER

Wallflower is a collection of painted wooden panels presented alongside ceramic vessels and textile pieces that draw inspiration from the artist’s observations of flora and fauna over a summer season. Rich with colour and botanical elements, the works provide a stylised snapshot of contemplation, recording meandering walks around the neighbourhood, vivid summer blooms and gardening still lives. Proof that nature is the perfect remedy for times of uncertainty, Wallflower creates a joyful and reflective space where quiet moments are celebrated as they should be. Esther Sandler is a textile designer and craft artist based in Melbourne, Australia.

These mountains are my mountainous. I present them visibly to you. I draw them from my imagination and perception. They do not represent any specific landscape. Mountains have a steep  vertical rise.  This symbolizes so much for me; durability, supremacy, strong will, endurance, resistance, safety, and sanctuary. I invite the viewer to delve deep into your subconscious and ask, what do these mountains symbolize to you?
