FRONT GALLERY ESSENTIAL: PORTRAITS OF FRONT-LINE WORKERS The COVID-19 pandemic and the recurring lockdowns have changed our society in ways we do not yet understand. While many of us worked from home, others had to turn up to workplaces every day, the ‘essential workers’. Media attention correctly salutes frontline health care workers actively fighting to save lives, while giving far less attention to the thousands of low-paid or casual workers who have kept our society functioning. Avraham’s new portraits elevate some of these essential workers to the status of those who were traditionally subjects for oil-paint portraiture: royals, religious figures, leaders in politics and industry. This show has been supported by Yarra City Council.

BACK GALLERY WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES A show that takes as its starting point a well known expression that's often produced as a tepid consolation, “When One Door Closes” explores the arduousness of making life choices - with all the accompanying uncertainties, hopes and anticipations. This series of portraits shows subjects absorbed in an internal dialogue, either contemplating approaching upheavals, paralyzed by indecision and pondering the concepts of Fate vs self-determination; or alternatively, processing feelings in an aftermath of a major event, attempting to fit pieces back together into a world where life makes sense again.

SIDE GALLERY SOLACE Ecological grief is a growing response to experienced and anticipated loss caused by environmental destruction or climate change. Yet, there is comfort and hope in solutions. Solace is a collection of wheel-thrown lidded vessels made by Claire Ellis using ceramic materials and waste. This body of work is a culmination of Ellis’ research and development using otherwise discarded materials in her practice. Clay bags collected from Melbourne studios are crafted by Ellis into lids, eggshells from a local egg farmer are the source of calcium in the glaze and glass bottles from Melbourne restaurants line the bottom of the vessels. This event is part of Melbourne Design Week 2022, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.

UPSTAIRS GALLERY SOLACE - NO TIME TO WASTE Clay and glaze materials washed off of tools and out of containers would quickly clog any plumbing system. Ceramics studios have clay traps or buckets in their sinks to collect this abundant mystery mix. The water is tipped off, the material is bagged and thrown away or fired in a kiln first to prevent run-off in our waterways. However, materials are materials and nothing is waste until it’s thrown away. These clocks made from sink sludge and broken ceramics are a reminder that we already have the solutions to our climate crisis and there is no time to waste.
