FRONT GALLERY

OFF-BLACK
by Sam Lucas

CATALOGUE

This exhibition features paintings that explore the themes of identity and diversity through still-life compositions of fabrics, foliage, and reflective objects. The paintings incorporate the flag as a symbol of pride and inclusion. The black and white fabric in the paintings represents balance, with equal amounts of black and white creating visual tension. These elements combined with reflective and glass objects on an off-black ground, encourage viewers to engage with the interplay of light and shadow.

GOOD MORNING, THANK YOU FOR ASKING
by Brendan Rowe

CATALOGUE

‘Good morning, thank you for asking’ explores themes of fragmentation and connection, tapping into our instinctual need to search for meaning. Using a jumble of pop-cultural iconography, classical references and bouquets of medical anatomy, this series of paintings celebrate the individual’s journey into the conflict between the rational and the absurd.

FROM MUDDY ROOTS
by Lauren Ottaway

CATALOGUE

A Japanese monk once told me: “the lotus is like human potential; even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters, it produces the most beautiful flower.”

Using a traditional Japanese painting technique, From Muddy Roots features portraits of lotus flowers as an analogy for the human condition and the ecosystem connecting us all.
Each work bloomed from ‘mud’. Hand-crushed pigment mixed with glue and water was layered over time, imbuing the work with temporality, dimensionality and transformation.

SUBLIMITY
by Anne Kucera

CATALOGUE

It is the light that first captures. Always the light, every time. But once the energy shifts, everything is altered. The stillness is immersive and dissolves any sense of self. It holds an intimacy and remoteness all at once. You are of it, but not within it. And as easily as that, an indelible mark is left on the human heart and the landscapes we move within, and which move us.
