Ku-Kikan by Masahiro Saito, Nodoka Sakamoto, Ichiro Mae, Murazumi Toymora, Kyue Mayumi & Rohan Hutchinson

Ku-kikan is a Fringe Festival exhibition curated around the idea of the atmosphere of space. Having already exhibited together in 2012 at the Kanazawa Art Centre, these 6 established artist from Japan and Australia are bringing their new work to Collingwood's intimate Off the Kerb Gallery.
Ku-kikan in its original Japanese context translates to atmosphere of a space, this exhibition is a body of diverse works by 6 established artist who explore this ideology within their work. The interests lie in how space/ atmosphere can influence ones art making practice, both sub-consciously and consciously, and how the 6 artists transcend these ideas into their artworks. The artist involved present the viewer with a diverse selection of installations and site specific works which explore the very thought of space, and how we use it, ranging from the inquisitive interactive installations of Nodoka Sakamoto to the hypnotic video work of Ichiro Mae. This exhibition is set to showcase a range of unseen works, which take the viewer to unforeseen ground. With all artist involved once residing in the Historical town of Kanazawa, Japan, Ku-kikan was developed through a connection of artist run spaces in Kanazawa and the Kanazawa Citizens Art Centre

4-D by MIKE MAKA

Off the Kerb is proud to present its third series of 4-D with the street art of Mike Maka. In March 2013, the back courtyard wall of the gallery was transformed into the 4D project space, offering an organic environment for street artists to present graffiti and paste up art in a legitimate and safe public arena. 4-D shows 4 street artists’ work over the course of 12 months. Each work is displayed on the wall for a season and in celebration of the restoration of the Keith Haring mural located opposite the gallery in the new site for Circus Oz.Mike Maka is a painter who works in a variety of media mainly on walls, canvas and illustration on paper. He has travelled and created work around the world, painting the Berlin Wall to the River Ganges. At 20, he received a scholarship to study art in New York, which led to working as a bike messenger for 10 years in 10 cities, and leaving his mark on many walls. An active member of Everfresh Studio since 2006, Mike has exhibited extensively through Australia as well as group shows in Brazil, Japan and New York, and has works in private and public collections locally and abroad, including acquisitions by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
His work is preoccupied with the interface between man, beast and machine. Mike Maka presents a visual riot that stimulates the mind. Mike’s art conveys an imperative message to those confined in the concrete jungle to stay connected to the animal within them that lives in the natural world.
